IndyVet | Nico
Nico, a 10 month old Australian Shepherd came to IndyVet due to a liver mass. Nico is deaf. His pawrents were kind enough to give us a cheat sheet on sign language so that our team would be able to communicate with him and to help him feel more at ease.

My GSD name is Daisy and she has this same condition (Megaesophagus). I have had her since she was a puppy, and could fit in my hands when we first got her. We noticed she had some problems eating as she got about 1 1/2 months old. She was puking all the time and was very skinny. We took her to several vets and had some tell us to not expect her to live long. She is now 9 years old. We feed her just like this. We found a vet and was able to figure out what was wrong with her. It is a rare condition but it happens mostly to GSD breeds. The vet helped us get her to a place north of SF to have surgery on her. She is the greatest dog I have ever owned and healthy as any other dog. At 9 years old she still acts like a puppy. Love the GSD breed.

Very sad as it's a serious medical condition for the pups, but it's always cute watching them eat in their little special chair 🐕 ❤

Omg who could resist that little face. And I did not know surgery could repair megaesophagus? Or was it for the arch issue?

My golden retriever 3 1/2 yr. old dog was just diagnosed with this a couple of weeks ago. She had an ear infection. Ear drops with antibiotics and steroids helped initially. But she still tilts her head and is clumsy. Will she straighten out? Her left side (the side with the ear infection) is weak and she falls to that side. My vet says to wait it out. But I'm so scared for her!

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly! She was on the eardrops for 7 days. That is all they told me she would need. She was not sedated but she is a good sport about letting people pick and probe her. Initially there was some debris seen in the ear canal but when she went back in about 3 days later they said it looked better. I could call and see if they feel x-rays are needed. I just have to wait to see if her head stops tilting. My heart is breaking seeing her like this. She is such a gentle dog.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since my 10 yr old chihuahua developed what the vet said was CVD. She still has the head tilt. Still has trouble with Balance and walking. I have to hold her when she eats or she will fall over. She wines a lot. She no longer goes to the back door and bangs her nose on the blind to be let out. Is there any hope for a complete recovery. The vet seemed to think so but I'm not seeing it.

My Pom is showing all the classic symptoms of Old Dog vestibular disease. He's 12 years old and when he walks he veers to his right, and walks in circles. His head is titled to the right in a sharp 90 degree angle. It almost looks like he has a broken neck. I took him to the vet and they put him on IV. He was in the VET's for 3 days and he improved a little bit. My vet believes it's a stroke or cancer. I brought him home he went down hill. He slept all day and was nauseated. He threw up 5 times a day. He wouldn't move. He would stay still and in one place. I took him back to the vet, but the vet didn't sound too positive. It's only been 1 week. I want to give it more time. I Don't know what to do. Don't know if its vestibular or cancer/stroke. The vets don't know either. They don't sound too sure. Time is running out.

+Indy Vet -- Thank you. Unfortunately, I don't live in the Indianapolis area, but I will ask my vet about a specialist. Yeh, I took my dog back to the vet Monday, and I'll give it till this Saturday. The vet hooked him back up to an IV and are giving him antibiotics and steroids. He hasn't show much improvement. The senior vet, who has 30 years experience, thinks my dog probably has cancer. He could have peripheral vestibular disease, but there may be a tumor causing it. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds for cat scan or MRI. I'll see what will happen in next 3 or 4 days.

+Bamruff62 -- Roo, my pom has fully recovered. I took him back to the vet and left him there for a week. The Vets shot him up with Penicillin, Benzathine, baytril and what have you. He was hooked up to an IV and fed fluids for 3 or 4 days. When I brought him home he was still sluggish for a week or 2. But he came out of it. When I brought him home he had a slight head tilt, but was no longer walking around in circles. But he has fully recovered. No head tilt. He is back to normal. But it took a good 2 1/2 weeks for Roo to come out of it.
